April 2022 Most Improved: Ian Bowers

Please share with us the reason you chose to enroll at SC Whitmore School.

I chose to enroll in SC Whitemore School due to personal matters making “normal” school no longer viable for me.

How has your experience been so far? We’d also love for you to tell us about any challenges you’ve encountered and how you’ve been able to overcome them.

Even after all of this time, it has been an adjustment; although, I am much better at handling the assignments I have been given. My biggest challenge is balancing my mental health and school assignments. I have overcome the challenges through counseling, changes in attitude, and developing a schedule that includes support when needed.

What helped you learn to adjust to online learning the most?

Online learning is easier for me than in-person learning due to the lack of distractions in a “normal” classroom. I did have to adjust to a different schedule. My family has helped me re-adjust as needed to finally finish high school.

Are there specific tools you use to help you stay on track with your assignments? (ex. Google calendar)

I use the activity map to make sure I have enough time and days in my classes. My mom uses the Friday round-up email to help remind me of where I stand in each class. I enjoy seeing when I am ahead in all of my classes. I use tutoring when I do not understand a concept, mainly in regard to math.

What are your academic and career goals?

In terms of academics, the most pressing plan is to graduate. After that, I plan to attend a Technical College and possibly obtain a stable source of income.

What advice do you have for other new students to SCWS?

I would advise new students to SC Whitmore School to work through several different schedules and find the system that works for them.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with us? What are some of the things you like to do for fun?

I can’t think of anything that’s pertinent.
