Please share with us the reason you chose to enroll at SC Whitmore School.
Two years ago, when schools started to become virtual because of COVID, my dad and I started looking for schools that specialized in online learning. My mom Kimberley found SCWS and it was the perfect fit! We knew that SC Whitmore was the best choice once we watched the Alumni videos on their website. I was super excited to do “School Your Way” by having all of my classes self paced. I was even able to get a year ahead and now I will be graduating with the class of 2022!
How has your experience been so far? We’d also love for you to tell us about any challenges you’ve encountered and how you’ve been able to overcome them.
I have absolutely loved being a student here at SCWS. All of my teachers have been so kind and encouraging in helping me with my classes and check in on me to see if I need anything. They really help me stay motivated by responding so quickly and giving me more than enough help when I need it. One challenge that I’ve faced is procrastination. With all of my classes being self-paced, it’s easy for me to say that I will do an assignment “later” and put off my class work. I was able to overcome this by making a schedule for myself and making small goals like “I will finish these assignments before I workout.” This really helped me stay on top of my work.
What helped you learn to adjust to online learning the most?
My teachers really helped me adjust to online learning. Whenever I was struggling with a lesson, I would reach out to them and they would always give me quick feedback with whatever lesson I was struggling with. If I needed any extra help, they would offer to meet with me through their appointment calendar to walk me through it. They really help me be a better student.
Are there specific tools you use to help you stay on track with your assignments? (ex. Google calendar)
The Course Map and Google Calander are super helpful in staying on track with my assignments. The Course Map makes it easy to plan out my day by seeing what’s due and how long each assignment would take me. This helps me set goals for how much work I want to get done for the day and week. I also love how SCWS has built in events in Google Calander. This helps me remember important meetings with my teachers, clubs, and due dates for important assignments.
What are your academic and career goals?
I have academic goals of graduating as Valedictorian and continuing to be an honors student going into college. I am excited to graduate with a major in math to go into the engineering field.
What advice do you have for other new students to SCWS?
My advice for new students coming to SCWS is to always ask for help when they need it. The teachers here at SCWS are so kind and encouraging and are more than happy to help. They have always been quick to respond when I reach out to them and always give me more than enough help when I need it. I would also tell new students at SCWS to stay ahead of pace. This helped me have “breathing room” for when I wanted to take more time on lessons that I didn’t catch on as quickly. Because I stayed ahead of the pacing guide I will now be graduating a whole year early!
Is there anything else you’d like to share with us? What are some of the things you like to do for fun?
