April Monthly Standout: Thomas Burnett

Please share with us the reason you chose to enroll at SC Whitmore School.

I chose to enroll at SC Whitmore School after I was told to just get a GED, I decided that it would be in my best interest to get a high school diploma instead as I feel that I could do better than just settle for a GED.

How has your experience been so far? We’d also love for you to tell us about any challenges you’ve encountered and how you’ve been able to overcome them.

My experience has been great, I have been able to communicate with my teachers more directly than in my previous brick and mortar school. I have also been able to get to know my teachers and they get to know me as well. The only challenge I’ve encountered is Edgenuity being down and not being able to do my school work, if this happens I just find something else to do until it is up again.

What helped you learn to adjust to online learning the most?

What helped me adjust to online learning the most was, well, being at home, to me, it’s a huge difference from my old traditional school as I can wake up whenever I can and have my own schedule. Funny enough another thing that helped me adapt was having a good homecooked lunch.

Are there specific tools you use to help you stay on track with your assignments? (ex. Google calendar)

There aren’t any specific tools I use to help stay on track other than my mental calendar and logging on.

What are your academic and career goals?

My academic goal is to get my diploma, for career goals, I’ll just see what the future has for me.

What advice do you have for other new students to SCWS?

The advice I have for new students is to do the activities, they are a lot of fun, especially the Christmas one because who could forget the evil snowman.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with us? What are some of the things you like to do for fun?

I play video games, lots of them, I have multiple consoles ranging from an atari 2600 to my gaming pc. I also like to skate whenever I get the chance. I’m also into Japanese pop culture especially Mobile Suit Gundam which I build the model kits from it.
