SC Whitmore School Announces Student of the Year

SC Whitmore School student of the yearColumbia, SC – South Carolina Whitmore School, a tuition-free, virtual public charter high school based in Columbia, is proud to announce the 2017 Student of the Year, senior Jami Mercer.

Mercer is a resident of Spartanburg and chose to attend SCWS in order to graduate early and work during the day. She holds a full-time job at Chick-Fil-A in Spartanburg, working Monday through Friday from 6am until 2pm. Mercer will graduate a year early in June and plans to attend a two-year college in Florida before transferring to a four-year university to study pharmacy.

“Jami has proven that focus and hard work can lead to being successful. She will be graduating early and already has a plan to attend college and pursue a pharmacy degree. She embodies the characteristics of the student we want to grow as outlined in our mission statement,” said SCWS School Counselor Amber Goff.

“Jami always worked hard. Her responses were well researched and thoughtful,”  said History teacher Trisha Lekovich.

“She is a hard worker and a great student,” said English teacher Alanna Cole.

Jami was chosen Student of the Year by SCWS teachers based on how well she has done this school year. Jami sees her strengths as responsibility and dedication.

SCWS is a tuition-free, virtual charter public high school that was founded in 2011 and aims to engage students in mastery learning. The school’s objective for students is to become independent learners in a challenging way while giving them the essential tools for success that they may need. This unique environment of learning is an alternate form of education for students who may be on an accelerated track or need a flexible academic calendar.
