SCWS Teacher of the Year Ashley Cannon

SC Whitmore School has named Social Studies Teacher Ashley Cannon as its 2019 Teacher of the Year.

Cannon has always had a passion for education and government. At a young age, he was given the opportunity to teach at his local church, and by 15 years old, was teaching adults in his town. “I’ve taught my entire life,” said Cannon. Paired with his passion for politics, it “just made sense,” to become a social studies teacher.

After graduating from the University of South Carolina in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and in 2001 with a Master’s in teaching, Cannon was excited to begin his teaching career.

After a decade of teaching in a traditional setting, Cannon said he began to feel burned out. Now, in his second year teaching full time at SCWS, Cannon said, “SC Whitmore has revived my teaching spirit.”

While he wasn’t expecting to receive this award, he is elated to have been given the recognition. “It really builds you up,” said Cannon.

Originally from Turbeville, SC, Cannon currently lives in Lexington, South Carolina with his wife and their three boys.

“Since Ashley joined our team in 2016, he has always gone above and beyond in supporting his students,” said SCWS Principal John Loveday. “Ashley consistently collaborates with the faculty and staff of SCWS to help make our school better each and every day. I couldn’t be more proud of Ashley. For him to be selected by his peers for this honor is well deserved.”
