SC Whitmore School Names Ashten Latta 2021 Employee of the Year

Press Releases

Columbia, SC – SC Whitmore School (SCWS), a statewide online public high school, has named Public Relations Manager, Ashten Latta as its 2021 Employee of the Year.

Latta’s passion for communication and education started at a very young age. “To this day, I remember waking up to the Tom Joyner Morning Show on the radio, walking to my parent’s room to watch the Today Show, and listening to the Tom Joyner Morning Show on the way to school,” said Latta. “I have always found informational news fascinating. Learning from one another and teaching others about our community is truly my passion.”

After graduating from the University of South Carolina in 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism, Latta knew she wanted to continue to connect our community through communication, and SC Whitmore School was the perfect place to give her the opportunity to do just that. Latta has been working to promote School Your Way at SCWS for almost two years and enjoys the energy and collective creativity from all the faculty and staff.

“I have always been an individual who likes to set goals, and work towards achieving success, said Latta. “Two concepts that my parents always shared with me are, teams win and success means more options. If you have a team that you can trust, communicate with, and believe in you will achieve success and success truly means you will have more options.

As the Public Relations Manager at SCWS Latta has the opportunity to share stories from alumni and current students, allowing them to see themselves at SCWS.

“We love having the opportunity to connect with our students, and in my opinion, one of the best ways we connect with our students is by hearing what they value and applying it in real-time,” said Latta. “It is important to take a step back and listen to what our community needs and successfully communicate the story.”

Latta’s efforts do not go unnoticed by her colleagues. “I nominated Ashten because of all of the many ways she’s gone above and beyond this year to help us stay connected,” said SCWS science teacher Robin Carter. “She’s been creative and innovative in making sure we feel the sense of community even over long distances while we are physically apart for safety purposes this year in particular,“ said Carter.

The SC Whitmore School Employee of the Year Award was a huge surprise and brings Latta great joy. “I work with some amazing individuals at SCWS who embrace unique ideas and are always ready to be team players,” said Latta. “I am truly honored and humbled to be named the 2021 Employee of the Year.”

“Since 2019 Ashten has brought her professionalism, creativity and energy to work each and every day. Ashten has made an incredible impact on our school,” said John Loveday, the executive director of SCWS. “Her work ethic and desire to make everything around her better is truly a special asset to our school. We are fortunate to have Ashten at SCWS. I look forward to witnessing everything she will accomplish in the future.”
