SC Whitmore School Student Wins National Championship in Cycling

Press Releases

Columbia, SC – Gray Barnett, a junior at SC Whitmore School (SCWS), a statewide online public charter high school recently won a national championship in cycling. Barnett is dedicated to his education and developing his professional cycling career. He has the opportunity to excel in both areas by attending SC Whitmore School.

Barnett started cycling in sixth grade and has won a total of six national medals. Cycling has required Barnett to travel throughout the school year, therefore; SC Whitmore School has worked well for his schedule. SCWS has allowed him to complete school work and ask for help in courses no matter where he was training or competing in the world.

I have really enjoyed SC Whitmore so far,” Barnett said. “The classes are very engaging and the teachers and staff are always there to help when needed.”

Barnett’s school counselor Traylor Disbrow said, “Gray exemplifies what it means to be a student at SC Whitmore School. Gray not only excels academically but also outside of our school as well with his joy of cycling. He has truly used SC Whitmore School’s flexibility to his advantage. While Gray excels in so many ways, I am most proud of how Gray advocates for himself in the way he communicates with not only his teachers but with me as well. It is a joy to get to partner with Gray to help him reach his goals and dreams for his future!”

SC Whitmore School Principal, Eboné Adams said, “Gray is a prime example of what discipline looks like. It is truly impressive. His ability to juggle the rigor of schoolwork with the demands of training and competition is a testament to his exceptional resilience and determination. We are proud of Gray’s accomplishments and we look forward to seeing and hearing more about his path to greatness.”

Barnett plans to graduate from SC Whitmore School in 2025, move to Europe to become a professional cyclist, and earn a college degree in a similar format to SC Whitmore School.

SC Whitmore School Executive Director, Kim Dunbar said, Gray is an outstanding student. He has done a great job balancing his academics and his passion for cycling. His type of success is what any student in South Carolina can achieve at SC Whitmore School due to the flexibility, personalization, and inclusivity. I look forward to hearing about his further accomplishments and successes.”

Gray, we are very proud of your accomplishments! We look forward to your future success!
