Columbia, SC — SC Whitmore School proudly announces Summer Yon as the 2026 Staff Member of the Year, recognizing her exceptional dedication, precision, and unwavering commitment to students, families, and colleagues across South Carolina.
A proud Midlands native who grew up in West Columbia and now calls Lexington home, Yon brings both heart and excellence to her role. A graduate of Columbia College with a Bachelor of Arts in History, she once dreamed of becoming a librarian or museum curator, fueled by her deep love of books, reading, and lifelong learning. Today, she channels that same passion into her work at SC Whitmore School, where her attention to detail and dedication to accuracy make a lasting impact every day.
Before joining SC Whitmore School, Yon spent seven years as a stay-at-home mom and previously worked for a local hospital. She and her husband are raising two wonderful children, and she credits her family as her greatest joy and inspiration.
Yon describes her work style as organized and detail-oriented. “I like to make a list of three things that I need to accomplish during my workday and go from there,” she shared. “Everything is important, and everything has to be done. I just have to prioritize tasks.”
In a fully virtual environment, she recognizes the importance of connection and trust. “Correct data is important for everyone—including students and staff. I want my colleagues to know that I am available whenever they need me and that they can trust the work I do.”
SC Whitmore School Principal Ebone Adams praised Yon’s leadership. She said, “Summer exemplifies excellence in every sense of the word. Her accuracy, organization, and commitment to getting the details right directly support our students’ success. Her impact is loud and clear across our entire organization. We are incredibly fortunate to have her on our team.”
SC Whitmore School Executive Director Kimberly Dunbar echoed that sentiment. She said, “Summer’s work is foundational to everything we do. In a virtual environment, precision and trust are critical, and she delivers both consistently. Beyond her technical expertise, she genuinely believes in our mission and in the potential of every student we serve. She represents the very best of SC Whitmore School.”
Yon says she thrives in the school’s flexible, mission-driven environment. “I very much enjoy my job. I like the details of the data, the satisfaction of completing various tasks, and knowing that my contribution matters to the overall team effort. Work-life balance is important, and I think it’s essential for everyone to find that balance in the workplace or classroom, whether in-person or virtual.”
She added, “I am thankful for my coworkers, our students, and families. SC Whitmore School is a special place. We offer an alternative and a choice for students in our state, and I truly believe every student deserves a chance to succeed and excel.”
As Staff Member of the Year, Summer Yon embodies SC Whitmore School’s commitment to excellence, integrity, and service. Her dedication ensures that students across South Carolina continue to receive the support, accuracy, and care they deserve.
