Luciana Hunter

Columbia, SC — SC Whitmore School (SCWS), a statewide online public charter high school, is proud to announce  Luciana Hunter has been selected as the school's 2025-2026 Student of the Year, recognizing her exceptional academic achievement, leadership, service, and commitment to excellence both inside and outside the classroom.

Luciana's journey to SC Whitmore School began with a search for a learning environment that would challenge her academically while providing meaningful connections with teachers and opportunities for growth. After attending a traditional brick-and-mortar high school, she sought a more personalized educational experience that offered honors courses, Advanced Placement classes, dual enrollment opportunities, and strong teacher support.

"SC Whitmore School checked every box I was looking for," said Hunter. "It offered rigorous academics, opportunities to participate in clubs and activities, and the flexibility to learn in a way that works best for me. My experience has been wonderful. The courses are challenging, meaningful, and focused on learning rather than busy work. I've always known that if I need help, my teachers are there to support me."

Since enrolling, Luciana has excelled academically while balancing numerous extracurricular activities and community service efforts. She is an active member of the school's Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter, where she advanced to the national competition during the club's inaugural year at SC Whitmore School. She also competes in Speech and Debate through her local school district and earned sixth place in Impromptu Speaking at the state level.

"Luciana has been an exceptional leader and ambassador for our FBLA chapter from the very beginning," said Courtney Williamson-Holley, FBLA Advisor at SC Whitmore School. "Her determination, professionalism, and commitment to excellence have helped set the standard for what is possible for our students. Advancing to the national level during the first year of our FBLA chapter was an incredible accomplishment, but what impresses me most is her willingness to support and encourage others along the way. Luciana leads with both confidence and kindness, and she represents SC Whitmore School with integrity in everything she does. I have no doubt that she will continue to achieve great things in the future."

Outside of school, Luciana volunteers her time serving her community, enjoys reading, crafting, baking, and playing music with a local organization. Looking ahead, she plans to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering with a focus on motorsports while continuing to challenge herself through dual enrollment coursework during her senior year.

"Luciana has been a trailblazer here at SC Whitmore and been named All-Star Student three times," said SC Whitmore School Math Teacher Melissa Green. "She does excellent work academically, provides service to her community at David's Table, and is an active member of several school clubs. She made it to Nationals for FBLA in the school's first year of the club. She is also a very kind and courteous young woman."

SC Whitmore School Principal Eboné Adams said Luciana exemplifies the qualities the school seeks to cultivate in every student.

"Luciana embodies what it means to be a Student of the Year," said Adams. "She is academically driven, purpose-focused, and deeply engaged in both her school and community. What makes her stand out is not only her impressive accomplishments, but also her character, determination, and willingness to encourage others. She represents the very best of SC Whitmore School, and we are incredibly proud of her achievements."

SC Whitmore School Executive Director Kim Dunbar praised Luciana's commitment to excellence and her role as a leader among her peers.

"Luciana's story is a powerful example of how students can thrive when they find the right learning environment," said Dunbar. "She has embraced every opportunity available to her and transformed those opportunities into remarkable achievements. Her dedication to academic excellence, service, leadership, and personal growth reflects the mission of SC Whitmore School. We are honored to recognize her as our 2025-2026 Student of the Year and look forward to seeing all she accomplishes in the future."

As she prepares for her senior year, Luciana hopes prospective students understand that virtual learning offers far more opportunities than many people realize.

"New students don't need to worry about a lack of opportunities or social interactions," said Hunter. "You can still participate in sports, clubs, and extracurricular activities. SC Whitmore School also offers a variety of clubs, in-person meetups, and experiences that help students connect and succeed."

SC Whitmore School is honored to recognize Luciana for her academic accomplishments, leadership, and passion for learning. Her story is a shining example of the opportunities available through SC Whitmore School.
